Field Band Foundation championships held

The championships will undoubtedly be filled with jubilant performances, uniting diverse talents from across South Africa and paying tribute to an icon who championed social change through music.

Last week the Field Band Foundation geared up for the highly anticipated return of the National Championships which took place on October 7 at DP World Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.

“The event marked the first national championships since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and promised to be an unforgettable celebration of joy, music and collaboration,” said Franqo Ntshole, the field band’s communications officer.

Different field bands performed at championships.

“Eight marching brass field bands from across the country took part in the competition and more than 1 000 youth performed including Birchleigh High School’s field band taking part.

“Birchleigh performed their personally choreographed songs, with percussion, brass, pit, dancers and colourful outfits bringing the music to life,” he added.

Ntshole said the music industry experts will make up the panel of judges, adjudicating in areas such as show design, brass performance and creative excellence, while partners, investors and friends of the Field Band take part in the celebrations.

He added that large-scale performance events such as this are critical in stimulating creativity, showcasing young performers and building pride.

According to Ntshole, over the years, about 9 400 members have participated in the Field Band National Championships.

“This event not only highlights the exceptional talent of our youth but also commemorates the impactful legacy of Nina Simone and the efforts of the Nina Simone Charitable Trust in promoting musical education and inclusivity,” said Ushama Ross Jerrier, national operations manager for the Field Band Foundation.
