Thembisa gets exposure to farmers market

The event contributed to empowering young people because they are being provided with a space to sell their products and they encourage young people to start their own businesses.

The provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development hosted a Farmers Market Family Day on April 28 at Motsu Park in Thembisa.

The free community event featured many activities for children including jumping castles.

According to Motlajo Makaepea, the chief director of the department, the purpose of the event was to provide an opportunity for farmers to sell their vegetables and processed agriculture products.

It also served as an opportunity for local food traders to sell and introduce their products.

“Through the event, we aim to create a market access platform for township small farmer holders and local traders.

“It is in line with the provincial program of supporting townships, informal settlements and hostels. It is known as TISH, which is a program that aims to grow the township economy,” said Makaepea.

“To grow the township economy, we have to support the producers that are based in the township who also support the retailers. We have to get the community to support them.

“It is important for young people to enter the sector of agriculture. If they do not enter the sector the country will begin to depend more on imported products,” said Makaepea.

The event was also about having fun and bringing people together.

One of the community members, Kate Monareng, said that they were introduced to homemade brands and products.

Local artists provided entertainment. One of the artists, Thabo Given Tefu, said that such events are important because it provides them with an opportunity to showcase their talents.

Ward 9 Clr Nomvula Malinga said the most important part of the event was to fight unemployment.

“We are trying to allow farmers and local traders to make a profit and introduce their products to the community.

“Young people will get a chance to learn where the food they eat comes from and how they can make a career from it.”

She added that the department is there to support young people who are interested in farming by supporting them with skills programs and resources.
