Parents demand answers at local school after a learner dies

Parents and the local police collaborate to protect children and educate them about social ills in order to create discipline in school children.

Police were notified by Ingqayizivele Secondary School of an allegation that a group of irate parents were disrupting lessons and pulling their children out of classrooms on February 20.

According to the Tembisa SAPS communications officer, Sergeant Patricia Mgijima, the school principal Mr Maebila and his staff along with Jabulile Maseko (a resident social worker from YANA), Mr Maponya (Department of Education), Thabiso (member of SGB) and leaders representing the parents engaged in a meeting.

“The meeting was to provide clarity on the allegations by parents that the school is hiding details surrounding the death of a learner at this school.

“Taking to the podium, the school principal clarified that the learner is alleged to have consumed a drug known to his friends as Mylan as they were the ones giving information to the school.

“Furthermore, the principal let the parents know that the learner did not buy or consume the said drug on the school premises hence he did not die at school.”

Sergeant Asnath Makgupya used this tense opportunity to address the parents.

She explained to the parents that while they are ready to react adversely when the school sends home letters asking them to attend meetings for a disciplinary hearing, they take their time.

“Your decision to remove your children from our supervision during school hours and give them the chance to visit parks and backyard rooms with friends is contributing to their involvement in gangsterism, drugs, bullying, and other problems,” said Makgupya.

Makgupya pointed to the stakeholders and informed the parents that although weekly school talks are held to discuss various social problems inside the school, parents must also take proactive steps to address these issues.

The parents asked for forgiveness for their approach to the scenario.

They even volunteered to erect a structure that will work with the schools and police to intensify protection, not only for Ingqayizivele Secondary School, but for all the other schools around Thembisa.
