Carjacking, home invasions, and sexual offences, including rape, have increased in recent weeks.

Winnie Mandela is a hotspot for burglaries, murders and rape, according to Tembisa SAPS communications officer Sergeant Patricia Mgijima.

“House robberies declined because of community involvement, police patrols, and patroller co-operation, and they began to disperse to the Motsu, Temong, Tsenelong, Caleni, and Esselen Park sections.

“In home invasions, the perpetrators typically have contacts in the main residence and claim to be looking for a place to rent. If the landlord says there isn’t a vacant room, they will insist that he/she step outside.

Then they will have a gun pointed at them and be told to ring the doorbells of all the tenants in the yard while being robbed.

“People are advised against jogging or exercising in the wee hours in remote areas or on sports fields because most rapes occur there and in home invasions.

“Most hijackings occur in the early hours near Esselen Park, where most e-hailing customers are abducted and have their goods and vehicles stolen.

“They are also told to send their money to the suspects’ accounts through a banking app,” said Mgijima.

Additionally, the community is urged to notify the police rather than enforce the law themselves when the suspects are captured.

She said the police oppose the killing of individuals but support citizen arrests.

Crime victims are encouraged to file claims because the police can not.

“If no case is filed against the suspects, police cannot detain them.”
