They were there to host a health campaign and engage with residents, staff and the community on health-related issues.

The event aimed to bring mobile clinics and services to people in informal settlements and hostels.

The community of Vusimuzi received these services:

• Adherence support for chronic treatment.

• Health and educational exhibitions.

• Health lifestyle activities (aerobics and walking).

• Oral health.

• Pap smears, PSA (protate-specific antigen) tests and many more.

“A person’s health is a result of their environment,” said Constable Selepe Kate, the Tembisa South SAPS communication officer.

“As a result, a healthy community is when every citizen has access to a high-quality education, secure and healthful housing, suitable work, reliable transportation, opportunities for physical activity and nutrition and high-quality healthcare.

“Chronic conditions including cancer, diabetes, and heart disease are the result of unhealthy communities.

“The prosperity and development of our community depend heavily on the well-being of our local communities.

“It is not just about the healthcare system but emphasises the need to adopt a healthy lifestyle to protect the community.

“Strong community health demands residents think beyond themselves and accept collective responsibility.

“Individual well-being is linked to community health. Good community health translates to healthy individuals. If your neighbourhood is unwell, maintaining your health might be challenging,” said Selepe.
