Reusable sanitary pads were collected as part of the studio’s chosen charity initiative for the year.

“We are all aware of how young girls sometimes miss school because they don’t have the resources or funds to buy the necessary wear. We managed to buy 20 packs of re-useable sanitary wear from Life Choices in Benoni,” said Dawn Mey.

“That’s 20 young girls who now will be able to attend school.”

Dawn added that a pack of five re-useable pads cost R175 and if looked after properly will have a life span of five years.

“On average a young girl will spend around R60 per month on normal pads. That’s R720 per year and R3 600 for five years. The re-useable pads are not only cost-efficient and hygienic, but they also don’t go into landfills.”

Almeya Belly Dance Studio has been teaching the techniques of belly dancing to women for 17 years.

“We want to empower women to be themselves. Twice a year we host functions and support various charities. This year we decided to help girls who would otherwise miss out on important school days.”
