Ivory Park family dies in shack fire

Neighbours were woken up by the cries for help but by then the fire was already raging and there was very little they could do to assist the victims.

Ivory Park SAPS opened an inquest into the death of four family members in a shack fire in the early hours of August 28.

“The incident took place in Ivory Park’s Ext 10, where a man of 34 and children between the ages of nine and 17 were heard screaming for help,” said Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Captain Ben Matimulane.

Matimulane said neighbours were woken up by the cries for help but by then the fire was already raging and there was very little they could do to assist the victims.

“They were all members of the same family,” added Matimulane.

Matimulane said the cause of the fire is still unknown at this stage but an inquest into the death of the four has been opened.

He said an investigation will be carried out to establish the cause.
