Locals urged to help Brainy Birds Parrot Rescue and Rehabilitation shelter

“With more companies and the community supporting Brainy Birds, we will have more stability and will be able to budget better.”

To generate much-needed funds, Brainy Birds Parrot Rescue and Rehabilitation plans to host three fundraisers in the coming weeks.

Community members are encouraged to support the NPO, which cares for and rehabilitates hundreds of abandoned and neglected birds.

Founder of Brainy Birds, Dee Hendrickx, said the organisation is in desperate need of funding.

“We seriously need to raise money for the organisation as funds have been coming in slowly,” said Dee.

She said on August 24, the organisation recovered 20 neglected birds from a suspected breeder from Krugersdorp.

Two of the 20 birds recovered from Krugersdorp sitting on a branch in a quarantine aviary at Brainy Birds.

“The birds, some were 40 years or older, were in a terrible condition,” said Dee.

Dee explained that because the NPO does not receive subsidies like many organisations, it has to raise funds.

With its first fundraiser set to be held on September 10, Brainy Birds hopes to usher in spring with a small spring festival and a picnic in the park.

The picnic will be held at Brainy Birds’ property and will be limited to 20 tickets.

Community members will be supplied with a picnic basket and lunch for the day.

To make the day successful, Dee appealed to the community and businesses for donations towards picnic baskets.

This includes cheese, picnic blankets, champagne glasses and chocolates.

“We would appreciate any donations towards the event. We would like the picnic in the park to be a day of awareness and not just fun,” said Dee.

Next on the NPO’s list of events is the Graham MacKenzie Fun Day Fundraiser, set to be held at Edenvale Bowling Club on September 17.

The two-part fundraiser invites bowlers and non-bowlers for a day of fun at EBC.

It gives community members the option of playing bowls, enjoying some tea and then letting their hair down at the 70s, 80s and 90s-themed disco.

Bowling teams that comprise four members must include one or two bowlers and two or three newbies.

The bowling will start at 13:30 for 14:00 and the disco at 19:30.

Contact Gail on 076 9905 271 for more information. The closing date for entries for the bowling is September 10.

“We have a great community, like the bowling club,” said Dee.

“Over the years the club has hosted numerous fundraisers for us.”

Last but not least Brainy Birds will host a fundraiser in Hartbeespoort at Casa Nietos.

On the day the NPO will turn up the heat as it welcomes community members to attend the October 1 beer and chilli festival.

The event will start at 10:00.

Dee explained that hosting the fundraisers would not be possible without the help of volunteers, specifically Jenny Jones and Tracy Johnson.

Emphasising the importance of volunteers, Dee said they are always involved at the NPO because Brainy Birds constantly needs volunteers.

“The kind of volunteers we are looking for need to be fit, hardworking and dedicated. They should be mature individuals who love animals and are available during the week.”

In light of Brainy Birds’ need for funding, Dee appealed to businesses to support the organisation.

“As a registered Section 18A organisation we can supply certificates to companies,” said Dee.

“With more companies and the community supporting Brainy Birds, we will have more stability and will be able to budget better.”

Alternatively, community members can donate second-hand items to the NPO’s charity shop located on Central Avenue in Eastleigh.
