Should Little Eden reach its goal by April 30, Xelda and Carl will perm their hair.

Previously when the society hosted its campaign R15 000 was raised.

Little Eden Society, a registered NPO, cares for 300 children and adults with profound intellectual disabilities at its Edenvale Domitilla and Danny Hyams Home and its Elvira Rota Village, in Bapsfontein.

The majority of Little Eden’s residents are abandoned or come from indigent families who can’t support them.

Little Eden Society’s public relations and communications coordinator Rethabile Lechela said although the average age of the society’s residents is 26, the average intellectual age is that of a one-year-old.

She said some function at the level of a newborn child and need to be fed, carried, changed and bathed.

Others can manage tasks like feeding themselves, brushing their teeth, dressing and using the toilet.

Rethabile said children are grouped according to their abilities and behaviour.

She highlighted that many of the residents also suffer from mental illness and multiple physical disabilities. They are cared for in specific groups where they feel comfortable and safe.
