IPID arrests police officers for Mthokozisi’s death

The officers are facing a murder charge, defeating the ends of justice and three charges of attempted murder.

Four police officers have been arrested in connection with Mthokozisi Ntumba’s death. Mthokozisi was shot and killed during student fees protests in Braamfontein last Wednesday (March 10).

Mthokozisi was not part of the protest and had left the house in the morning to visit a clinic in Braamfontein when the shooting occurred. Independent Police Investigative Directorate national spokesperson Ndileka Cola said the officers arrested are from the Public Order Policing Unit and faces a murder charge, defeating the ends of justice and three charges of attempted murder.

Mthokozisi was a father of four children with the youngest being eight months old. He had just completed his master’s degree.

“He was a determined and progressive young man. He lost his parents at a young age and together with his brothers, Ayanda and Sanele, they worked very hard to be where they are,” said Mthokozisi’s cousin, Sthembiso Jwara.

“He was a bright light for us. He managed to build a home for his family. Besides his immediate family, he had a lot to offer. Mthokozisi was a humble, respected and respectful person who was also very joyful.”
