Relief for Thopola as Chippa United prepares for the resumption of the 2019/20 season

The center-back defender joined United on loan from Orlando Pirates.

Chippa United defender Diamond Thopola (30) is eager to get back to playing.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) announced the resumption of the 2019/20 season to commence on August 8 after the league suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The team’s opening fixture will take place on August 11 against Mamelodi Sundowns at 6pm.

The Port Elizabeth-based Chilli Boys, as they are affectionately known by their fans, will finish the remaining fixtures of the season at Orlando Stadium in Soweto as allocated by the PSL.

The center-back defender joined United on loan from Orlando Pirates.

The team hopes to finish in the top of the log to avoid history repeating itself as the Chilli Boys are only three points away from relegation.

“We train once or twice a day. It’s something that we’re now used to.

“God blessed me with a talent and I’m fortunate enough to have a job while others are struggling to survive. Opportunities like this don’t come every day or for everyone,” Thopola said.

Injuries

“I suffered several injuries of late. Since I’ve spent a lot of time on the sidelines, it feels good to be back on the field.

“I missed playing and showcasing my skills. As a team we are trying our level best to make sure we’re fit and ready to finish the remaining games of the league with style and winning attitude.

“Being out due to injuries delayed my progress, but everything happens for a reason. They’re part of this game so I just have to bounce back stronger.

“The most important thing for me now is to keep working hard to make sure I get back to my level best, stay injury free, look after myself, to be positive and stay motivated.”

The former Birch Acres Football Club player’s personal goal is to achieve his dream of scoring many goals and notching up a number of wins as the season kicks off again.

“When I look back one day I want to be proud of what I accomplished.

“Upcoming soccer stars wishing to play at a professional level must work hard and believe in themselves. Soccer taught me respect, patience and discipline. Apply these factors to help guide you to becoming the finest player you can be,” said Thopola.
