Man killed in Birchleigh during attempted hijacking

The driver was shot dead while his passenger sustained a gunshot wound to his thigh

The driver of an Amarok was shot dead and his passenger wounded during an attempted hijacking on Maroela Street in Birchleigh at 11pm on Saturday.

Sgt Johanna Madiga, spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, told Express on Sunday morning that the victims were believed to be Edleen residents who were dropping off a friend at home when they were approached by an unknown number of suspects.

“A white Ford Ranger double cab pulled up behind them in the driveway. The driver was shot multiple times in the face and upper body while the passenger sustained a gunshot wound to his thigh.

“The driver was declared dead on the scene and his passenger was transported to Zamokuhle Private Hospital in Thembisa.”

Madiga said no suspects had been identified as yet and no arrests had been made.

“The station commander, Col Johannes Tau, is grateful to MML Security which was first to stand-off on the scene.”
