Bonoko is a cancer ambasador

Tembisa's own cancer survivor, Kelebone Bonoko, is now a South African Cancer Ambassador.

She was honored by the American Cancer Society as an International Hero of Hope. Speaking on Tuesday last week, the soft-spoken Bonoko says she believes God is the only reason why she defeated cancer. She wants to teach and inspire people to always believe in the Lord in whatever they do.

“With God, everything is possible. Since the day I was told I had cancer, I knew deep inside that if I ask God to give me more days on Earth, I will win the battle against cancer,” she said.

She added that she is going all-out to help members of the community to be strong whenever they encounter life threatening situations.

“I am passionate about making a difference and raising awareness, which will help and change peoples’ lives. I also do motivational talks and volunteer my time for the Cansa Relay for Life, which focuses on cancer survivors. The Relay for Life is a movement of HOPE,” she said.

She added that she dedicated her life to helping others by bringing awareness within the “black communities”.

“Cancer is still a very taboo topic for us. I remember when I was told I had cancer, how in disbelief I was, I thought no ways, this is a white man’s disease and I am still very young, but reality struck and it was a journey and a half. I am passionate because not only will I tell my cancer story, but people with other diseases and people who have given up hope in life will relate to my journey, in return can save or change someone’s life.”

She has also started an events company called Afri-Tainment.

In order to help Tembisans and people from the surrounding areas, Afri-Tainment will host a cancer awareness campaign called FightDeBigC on the November 22. The event starts at 1pm and runs until 4pm at the Tembisa Christian Family Church. Entrance is free.
