Max informal settlement residents go hungry

Residents live in fear of starvation as the number of families going to bed hungry increases.

Residents of Max Informal Settlement on Great North Road say they have applied and registered for food parcels but have not received anything yet.

Most residents survive by doing piece jobs.

However, the lockdown has left many unemployed. Residents live in fear of starvation as the number of families going to bed hungry increases.

According to Nthabiseng Mnisi, a Max Informal Settlement resident, some residents have returned to the streets to hustle in order to provide for their families amid the lockdown.

“Different people have been coming to the settlement to collect our names and phone numbers for food parcels but they haven’t returned. There is a massive need for food in our community. We appeal to the public to donate any non-perishable food they may have for our community members,” said Mnisi.
