Metro partners with churches to get food parcels out

Individuals who seek assistance are requested to call their local churches to request assistance

Executive mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina on April 22 announced a partnership between the Ekurhuleni Faith-Based Organisations (FBO) and the Ekurhuleni Covid-19 Food Bank, reaffirming the City’s commitment to ensure that the citizens of Ekurhuleni do not suffer from hunger due to the global pandemic.

This partnership marks an essential step in providing targeted emergency relief to families that have lost income due to the Covid-19 pandemic and can no longer afford to buy food.

The local FBOs will be tasked to create a citywide list of families that require immediate relief due to the pandemic. The Ekurhuleni Covid-19 Food Bank will supply the FBOs with food parcels for their distribution.

Distribution of all food parcels will still be recorded and form part of the monthly report the City will submit to council.

“FBOs are the nuclei of our communities, they provide us with hope, shelter and faith in times of need,” said Masina.

“This crisis has shown that it is now more important than ever for the City of Ekurhuleni to work hand in hand with our social partners to ensure the protection and livelihood of our communities. I want to thank our local FBOs for partnering with us to ensure that all citizens can get a decent meal during this nationwide lockdown period.”

The Ekurhuleni Faith-Based Organisations is chaired and represented by Pastor Xola Nzo from Change Bible Church in Katlehong. The FBO will be delivering food parcels directly to households. No one should visit or queue outside a church.

Individuals who seek assistance are requested to call their local churches to request assistance. The City’s Department of Health and Social Development will continue to make deliveries of food parcels to families identified by ward councillors.
