Bakkie dives into huge hole on Isando Road

The hole was left by municipal workers who had begun repairing a water pipe

A bakkie was finally pulled out of a water-filled hole on Thursday morning on Isando Road in Isando, after spending the night inside the ditch.

According to ward councillor Simon Lapping, the hole was left by municipal workers who had started fixing a water pipe that had been reported two and a half weeks ago.

It is unclear how the driver of the Akhane construction vehicle maneuvered through the yellow construction barricades that were placed around the hole.

It is suspected the incident took place some time on Wednesday night.

The driver of the bakkie was not found at the scene. Express is trying to obtain comment from the company.

Lapping said he received a photo of the bakkie inside the hole at 4.30am this morning via WhatsApp and was shocked at what he saw. “I couldn’t believe my eyes. I honestly thought the photo was Photoshopped or something,” he told EXPRESS.

He then made his way to the scene of the incident at about 8am..

“When I arrived there the car was still stuck, but there was no driver in sight. What I suspect happened is that because the pipe was still leaking when the workers knocked off yesterday, the water filled up inside the hole.”

More details and a video taken at the scene of the recovery of the bakkie will follow.
