Watch: Fire breaks out at Richards Bay Civic Centre

Hundreds of people had to be evacuated as a fire broke out at the centre, reportedly at the dining area near the council chambers.

City of uMhlathuze municipal staff and members of the public were evacuated at the Richards Bay Civic Centre after a fire broke out this morning.

While it is unclear what caused the fire, it is believed that the blaze broke out in the dining area near council chambers.

The city’s fire department was on scene in an attempt to extinguish the massive blaze which engulfed the chambers.

The disaster manager indicated that the building will not be safe for use for the day and even when the fire is put out. Residents are urged to avoid the area.
