Drugs concealed as gifts confiscated at OR Tambo

The cocaine was seized after customs officials inspected two gift parcels en route to London

THE South African Revenue Services (SARS) confiscated R2 million worth of liquid cocaine concealed as gifts at OR Tambo International Airport on Wednesday.

“The cocaine was discovered in wine bottles in two parcels, each one marked as a ‘gift’ and wrapped in cheerful Christmas wrapping paper,” said SARS spokesperson, Sandile Memela.

Officials found the consistency of the liquid to be thicker than wine and upon closer inspection, found the bottles had been tampered with.
The cocaine was taken for testing and once weighed, coming in at 7kg, was handed over to the police for further investigation and possible arrest.
