Robber busted in veld after smash and grab at intersection

The suspect was find hiding in a bush and arrested before he could make it to his waiting accomplices

A smash and grab robber who tried to hide in a veld, was busted by police.

On September 9 police arrested the suspect after they found him hiding in a veld at the R21 and R23 intersection after robbing a motorist.

According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesman for Kempton SAPS, police were called to the scene at about 7.30pm after someone had said they heard screaming and a gunshot going off.

“On arrival, the informer told the police that a man had robbed a BMW driver at the traffic lights at the intersection after which he ran into the nearby bush,” Mtshali said.

“The police proceeded to check the nearby bushes.”

During the search, the suspect was found hiding in the veld. He claimed he was from Mamelodi, Pretoria and led the police to his accomplices, who were waiting for him in a Citi Golf getaway car at an Engen garage in Bredell.

Their car was also searched and an LG radio face, Opel car keys and a bunch of other keys were discovered in the vehicle.

The suspects, in their late 30s, were arrested for possession of suspected stolen goods and possession of implements used to commit crimes.

An investigation continues to establish whether the suspects could be linked to previous crimes, especially smash and grabs and common robbery.
