Burning in Melville Koppies reveals new life

Take the self-guided 3km historical walk, hike 5km, or any pathway around the Koppies. Alternatively, schedule a tour starting at exactly 08:00.

The grassland sections of Melville Koppies are burnt in August to keep the grassland from turning into a forest and encourage fresh growth.

Other lives are revealed in the burnt areas. The Koppies were home to Johannesburg’s earliest farmers hundreds of years ago.

Visit Melville Koppies and discover stone walling.

They farmed cattle and goats and built stone walls around their homesteads and at the base of their houses. Visit Melville Koppies soon and see if you can spot the remains of these stone walls dotted across the northern slopes.

Residents can visit the Koppies on a Sunday between 08:00 and 11:00.
