Melville Koppies provides plenty more to offer

Residents can also join an 8km historical hike across the Koppies on September 24.

Beyond being a nature reserve and historic place, Melville Koppies offers much more.

It serves as a venue for students to apply what they are learning in real-world situations.

Students at Wits in their third year studying functional ecology in a changing environment must become aware of the value of fire to grasslands and perform numerous tests to gauge this.

Most grasslands are remote and difficult to reach.

A 15-minute bus ride gets them to Melville Koppies.

Before the area of grassland was burned, the students collected cut grass in bottles to assess its humidity, computed the grass load and recorded wind speed, temperature and humidity using the Kelsey instrument.

Another group squatted to assess the regrowth of another area that had been burned a few weeks earlier.

Residents can visit the Koppies on a Sunday between 08:00 and 11:00.

Take the self-guided 3km historical walk, hike 5km, or any pathway around the Koppies. Alternatively, schedule a tour starting at exactly 08:00.
