Local squad seizes illegal firearm and arrest suspects

The Benoni Flying Squad made two arrests and recovered one firearm between August 15 and 16.

The Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) members arrested two suspects and recovered one firearm.

On August 15, a victim complaining about assault stopped officers patrolling the Benoni CBD.

The complainant pointed out the 34-year-old suspect on Tom Jones Road near a hotel, and the BFS immediately arrested him.

Officers patrolling Etwatwa Ext 1 on August 16 were alerted to an armed robbery on Mangethe Street, Railway Section.

On arrival, they found the complainant with community members, who had assisted her, and two suspects in a white Volkswagen Polo.

Allegedly, the suspects had picked her up in Benoni posing as an Uber ride and, after arriving on the scene, pointed a firearm at her and attempted to rob her.

The complainant jumped out of the vehicle. After making a scene, community members helped her and confronted the suspects.

On the scene, the BFS members recovered a Z-88 9mm pistol with no serial number and arrested the two suspects.

The BFS found the pistol without ammunition, which likely prevented its use in retaliatory action against the complainant and community.

They impounded the vehicle for being used in a crime.

Investigation continues in all cases.

The suspects will appear in the local magistrate’s courts facing charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, possession of an unlicensed firearm and attempted robbery.
