Local athletics club hosts another 10km race

Fat Cats Athletic Club is set to host its 5th instalment of their 10 km race on October 8.

Fat Cats Athletics Club is one of South Africa’s running clubs with a unique offering, as it will be hosting its historic fifth instalment of the Fat Cats 10K race.

The race affectionately known as a run for the whole family will take on October 8.

The fifth instalment of the Fat Cats 10km race is going to be special for several reasons, apart from the obvious one that we will be celebrating five years of this family event.

The mother club, which boasts other social sporting codes apart from running, was founded in 2003 and is celebrating 20 years of keeping its special members fit while also positively promoting socialising.

Fat Cats AC is not making this statement lightly but has evidence to back it up through many initiatives that they have embarked on over the past 20 years.

They have shared goods with many communities around the country and in neighbouring countries through their community development initiatives.

These initiatives, run under the Fat Cats CSI sub-brand and the tagline Cats Cares, have taken various shapes including school and university bursaries, school uniform donations, donations to homes and other charity organisations, donations of sports equipment to individuals and clubs, as well as coaching and mentoring opportunities for youngsters from disadvantaged communities.

Fat Cats 10K race director Cindy Nkomo said the club is excited about this year’s race, not only because it will bring people together but also because it will mark the addition of new innovations to the event.

“Our focus is on creating a race that to cater for each member of the family. We want participants to leave the race with a sense of unity and deeper connection.”

“We have also upgraded the 5km fun run to a timed race with a prize money of R2 400,” Nkomo said.

Nkomo added that family is one of the core values of the club and this year will be no different as the theme of the race remains ‘a run for the whole family’.

Distances include 10km, 5km, Kitten Miller, and Nappy Dash.

“There will also be full-day activities on the race day that will be streamed live on our social media pages. This is something for everyone, and we encourage everyone to participate”, she said.

Fat Cats AC chairperson Vongani Mashile said that he would like to commend the race committee for the work they’re putting into ensuring that they host another spectacular event.

“We are confident that this year the race will attract more participants as people will be looking forward to getting outdoors following the cold snap.”

All registrations for the race can be done via the Fat Cats AC website at www.fatcats.africa.
