Several suspects arrested in local anti-crime operation

Other suspects were arrested during high-density operations, which were conducted over the weekend.

A total of 261 suspects were arrested for various cases within Ekurhuleni policing precincts between June 30 to July 2.

In addition, 10 illegal liquor outlets were closed in Chloorkop.

The SAPS district office’s spokesperson, Captain Neldah Sekgobela, said that 145 suspects were arrested by detectives in the district.

Other suspects were arrested during high-density operations, which were conducted over the weekend.

She added that in Norkem Park area, another suspect was also arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition and attempted murder.

“The arrest came after the detective who was on his way to work spotted three vehicles with six occupants at the Mooifontein Cemetery. The member asked for a backup from his office,” she said.

Sekgobela said that when they approached the vehicles, they drove in different directions and a shootout ensued between the suspects and the police in which one suspect was injured.

She added an unlicensed firearm with six live rounds of ammunition was found in his possession.

“A Toyota Corolla and Audi that was allegedly used in commission of a business robbery in Kempton Park earlier that day were also recovered,” said Sekgobela.
