The ongoing rains have resulted in muddy conditions at the landfill sites, which in turn has affected the turnaround time in waste management services.

According to CoE spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, in recent weeks the city’s vehicles and those of services providers have been taking longer to do their rounds because of the time they take navigating their way around the landfill sites.
This development has had a negative impact on the already strained waste removal service in the city.
“The Simmer and Jack, and Platkop landfill sites are the hardest hit,” said Dlamini.
“What is even worse is that quite a number of our vehicles use these facilities.”
Areas affected the most include Thembisa; Edenvale; Kempton Park; Germiston; Alberton and Boksburg.

“The city will continue to render the normal round collections despite the challenges and in areas that we may have missed on a particular day, the backlog will surely be attended to within a day or two at most.
“In the meantime, as the rain persists, trucks may use the Rietfontein landfill site as an offloading zone to ease the pressure,” said Dlamini.
