She approached Peter Arendse, who was a deputy principal of Oosrand Secondary School at that time and proposed to form a cycling club at the school.

“The man, who is now the principal of the school, liked the idea and granted me permission to establish the club. The rest is history.

“The club comprises U13 up to U19 age division teams, girls and boys. They all train together, but compete in different age groups during cycling competitions,” said Ruiters.

She said they plan to erect a track field on the Oosrand Secondary School premises so that her cyclers can train better.

“Most schools that we are competing against are private schools and they have good facilities. We can win the cycling league with good equipment and facilities.

“We need sponsors for that to happen and I hope we will get sponsors in the future.”

She stated that her team boasts 15 cyclers and her aim is get more cyclers to join her club, especially women.

“My club members train on Tuesdays and Thursdays late in the afternoons at the school, so people are welcome to join the team on those days.

“The principal of Drommedaris Primary School has invited me to her school.

“She wants me to form a cycling club. I don’t have bicycles to establish the club since smaller bicycles are needed.

“I’m appealing to people to donate size 16, 20 and 24 bicycles so that I can launch the second club,” said Ruiters.
