One suspect dies after mob attack in Birch Acres

Cases of attempted murder and murder are under investigation at Norkem Park SAPS following an alleged mob justice incident in Birch Acres.

According to Barbara-Anne Ferreira, spokesperson for Norkem Park SAPS, this follows an incident that took place on October 7 in Ebony Street, Birch Acres.

“It is alleged that two suspects had stolen a cellphone from someone before a community member grabbed one of the suspects and called for help. Soon a group of people had apprehended both of the suspects,” said Ferreira.

“On arrival, police found that the two suspects were injured.

“One of the alleged suspects was severely assaulted with a sjambok while the other was shot three times in the foot.”

Ferreira said it is unknown, at this stage who shot the suspect. Both suspects were transported to hospital.

“The suspect assaulted with a sjambok succumbed to his injuries and died in hospital on October 10,” Ferreira told Express on Monday morning.

“The other suspect is still in hospital and police have opened a docket for attempted murder and murder. The SAPS strongly condemns the community for taking the law into their own hands.

“Contact police on 10111 when needed or free from your cellphone on 112.”
