Local bowling club holds fundraiser this September

Set to be held at Edenvale Bowling Club the event will take place on September 17 and entries for the bowls close on September 10.

Edenvale Bowling Club is calling on bowlers and non-bowlers to attend its Graham MacKenzie Fun Day Fundraiser.

Set to be held at Edenvale Bowling Club the event will take place on September 17.

Gail White of Edenvale Bowling Club explained that the tournament is being held to honour MacKenzie, who was a former Edenvale resident and head coach at the Nest Hotel.

Gail explained that MacKenzie started his bowls career early on in his life and was a member of Edenvale bowling club for over 50 years.

During that time, he achieved many accolades and won many tournaments.

He was part of the team of umpires for the 1976 world bowls tournament held at Zoo Lake and was also president of the Umpires for many years.

MacKenzie co-founded the South African Coaches Council and was president until he died in 2017.

He never missed a coach’s clinic for the duration of his life, wherever it was.

During his bowling career, MacKenzie was an honorary life member of Bowl South Africa, Ekurhuleni bowls as well as the Edenvale club.

He also was a coach and guide for many years for the Friends of the Lions tours to South Africa and made many friends.

He was asked to coach the Jersey bowls team for the Worlds and they won that year.

Gail highlighted that this tournament is being hosted in honour of MacKenzie and all he gave to bowls.

“The objective of the day is to have fun and laugh as that was his motto,” said Gail.

Besides honouring MacKenzie, the event will raise funds for Brainy Birds Parrot Rescue.

The two-part fundraiser gives community members the option of playing bowls, enjoying some tea and then letting their hair down at the 70s, 80s and 90s-themed disco.

Bowls teams that comprise four members must include one or two bowlers and two or three newbies.
The bowls will start at 13:30 for 14:00 and the disco at 19:30.
