Ivory Park community helps police catch robbery suspect

Three suspects are still on the run while one remains in custody following a house robbery in Ivory Park Ext 7.

Ivory Park SAPS station commander welcomed the arrest of a man for house robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm on August 14.

“The suspect was part of a three-man group that entered a home in Ivory Park Ext Seven and robbed the owner as well as his two guests of their money, cellphones and a plasma TV.

“Before fleeing, they fired shots into the air,” said Ivory Park SAPS Captain Ben Matimulane.

Matimulane said the men were armed and one firearm that was recovered had its serial number filed off.

“After shots were fired and the robbers fled, the victims managed to scream for help and the community came out in numbers and arrest one of the suspects, who was found in possession of a firearm and four phones.

“One of the phones was identified as that of one of the victims,” said Matimulane.

“We take our hats off to the neighbours as their intervention secured the arrest,” said Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, Ivory Park SAPS station commander.

The suspect was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and house robbery.

Matimulane said the search for his accomplices is ongoing.
