According to Ward 15 Councillor, Amanda Davison, the revamp, which is underway, is expected to take about 10 weeks.

“It is a complete revamp that will happen in two phases, the breaking down (currently underway), which will be followed by the rebuilding and installing of new tanks and pipes,” explained Davison.

Shell Van Riebeeck is under construction after years of being non-functional.

“Although this is a potentially hazardous process, safety measures have been thoroughly considered and are being practised. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was also done years ago.”

EIA is a method of assessing the possible environmental impacts of a proposed project or development, taking into account inter-related socio-economic, cultural and human-health impacts, both positive and negative.

Davison appeals to residents to be patient during the duration of the construction, that might also produce noise.

“Heavy vehicles using the roads are among some of the inconveniences expected with the project,” said Davison.

“Traffic might also be affected. I hope residents will be understanding given that this project is also shining a light on local employment with local SMMEs to be employed.”

The councillor also shares that she welcomes the construction as it is a much-need relief.

“Residents have been asking when the petrol station would get fixed as it has been non-operational for years and was becoming an eyesore to the area,” shared Davison.

“It really was not a good look for the area and had become a crime area. Vagrants were also spotted at the site.

“I am hoping for minimal inconvenience and for the project to go according to schedule. Thank you to the residents for their patience and understanding in advance.”
