Grade R learners visit Birchleigh Library

The habit of reading is kept alive by the Friends of The Kempton Park Libraries.

“The decline of literature indicates the decline of a nation,” is a famous quote by the late German poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, which rings true to the initiative of instilling the habit of reading in young minds.

This was evident as five and six year olds from Aunty Carol Kid’s City visited the Birchleigh Library on May 25.

The visit was an initiative by Friends of The Kempton Park Libraries who, among other things, strive to encourage regular usage of libraries and keep the habit of reading alive.

“Friends of The Kempton Park Libraries is a local organisation that has been running for over 20 years,” said Jeanette Gunningham, chairperson of Friends of The Kempton Park Libraries.

“Our core purpose is to support the libraries and to collect funds to put new books into the libraries.

“Reading is important and we need to introduce it at a young age, which is why we introduced this initiative to instil the habit of visiting the library in children.”
The visit included a tour of the library where the librarian explained each section and functions of the library. A story was read to the children, followed by decorating and icing cupcakes.

“It truly was fun to spend time at the library. We are pleased to have been part of this initiative,” said Carol from Aunty Carol Kid’s City.

“The children had fun. We have taken note of the library operating hours and will relay the message to the parents to take the children to the library and join their children in visiting and reading books from the library.”
