Tips for home security maintenance

Adrian Goslett, regional director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa, said homeowners should conduct regular maintenance on their home security systems not only to protect themselves but also to guard the potential resale value of their homes.
“Home security features can be a top-selling feature for most South African buyers. Keeping these features in top shape will not only help keep homeowners safe, but it might also prevent the need for costly repairs or replacements when it comes time to sell,” he said.
To ensure the home security system is in top working order, RE/MAX of Southern Africa provides the following tips:
Dust sensors regularly
Whether it is a smoke detector, motion sensor or alarm beam, homeowners are advised to wipe any sensors down regularly to prevent a build-up of dust or debris from hindering its functionality.
“Dusty or yellowing sensors portray that the home has not been well maintained and the security system might be outdated. This can lead buyers to make cheekier, low-ball offers on the home,” Goslett warns.
Test all systems
Never take it for granted that all systems are working. It is advisable to conduct regular tests to see that all systems are communicating with one another correctly and that all beams and sensors are in working order.
Doing so can help identify any issues before they become bigger problems that lead to more costly repairs. For those with smart security systems, it is also important to check for any updates or notifications on the keypad screen of the security system.
Maintain all access points
Never neglect the more basic home security features, including locks on all exterior doors, windows, gates, fences, exterior walls, burglar bars and security gates.
Check these features regularly to spot any corrosion, rot or damage that could make it easier to gain access through these entry points.
Installing security features on a home is only the first step towards ensuring a household’s safety.
“Homeowners need to conduct regular checks and maintenance on the home security features to help keep the household safe. As a bonus, keeping these features well-maintained will also help towards protecting the future resale value of the home,” Goslett said.
