“We welcomed the divine intervention from the pastors who said they want to assist. We are doing a lot to reduce crime but we feel it is not enough and such interventions are welcome,” said Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS.

Pastors present were Andre Roodt, Timothy Ntlemo and William Markus.

One of the areas visited was the intersection on corner Kelvin Road and CR Swart Drive.

The second praying spot was on corner Central Avenue and Pretoria Road where people also joined in on the prayer.

“This area is problematic, especially for female motorists as they are mostly targeted,” explained Mtshali.

“It is for this reason that we always advise against placing valuables, such as bags and laptops where they are visible, as criminals can easily spot such and often see it as an opportunity for a smash-and-grab. Smash-and-grab is a huge problem and we advise everyone to be extra careful when travelling around that area.”

The prayer session was also aimed at businesses to prosper. The growth of businesses is also linked to job creation, which will help community members.

According to the pastors, creating employment is vital as some people resort to crime out of desperation.

“People often get mugged coming into and from the taxi rank and there are cars that also get broken into,” said Mtshali.

“We encourage people to be more vigilant.”
