EMPD tip of the week

The speed limit is 60km/h in built-up areas, 100km/h outside built-up areas and 120km/h on freeways.

In the City of Ekurhuleni, motorists caught speeding excessively by EMPD officers are either given a verbal warning, written notice or summons to appear in court (speeding fine/ticket) or under certain circumstances handcuffed and taken to the nearest police station.

At the police station, a reckless and negligent driving case would be registered against the speedsters. However, there’s a grace provision by the law, for exceeding the speed limit to motorists and it is explained clearly by law enforcers to offenders before the appropriate action, prosecution or discretion is applied.

The arrested suspects would have their day in the relevant magistrate’s court, for the hearing.

NB: Some heavy motor vehicles, depending on the gross vehicle mass (GVM), operated on a public road for rewards, transporting goods or passengers, is limited to the speed of 80km/h. Other motor vehicles operated on the public road for rewards (depending on the GVM), ferrying passengers or goods for rewards, is limited to the speed limit of 100km/h.
