Kempton Park shop owners speak out after riots

Express spoke to a few shop owners about how they were affected.

Last week saw the closing of many businesses throughout the country out of fear of looting and theft.

Last week Monday several Kempton Park businesses had to close their doors, especially after protesters took to Pretoria Road.

Express spoke to a few shop owners about how they were affected.

Rajeev Bhanghan from We Power Electrical said he had to close his store early and was forced to move his stock to a storeroom out of fear of it being looted.

He opened for business on Tuesday but customers were few.

Braam Oosthuizen from Vleisfabriek also had to close the store’s doors.

Festival Mall also saw a drop in the number of shoppers coming through its doors. The mall reopened later in the week.

Nicky Fleischman from High Road Butchery said although they weren’t affected by the riots directly, they will be affected indirectly as many of the big stores that buy from them were targeted by looters.

Johnathon Hobkirk from Evergreen Market said he has experienced the opposite of many stores. He said many people are panic-buying for fear of food running out.
