CoE responds to resident demanding proactive service delivery

“Better service delivery requires community activism where service lapses are pointed out,” said the City of Ekurhuleni.

In a letter to the editor, a Kempton Park resident posed the question: Why can the City of Ekurhuleni not be proactive instead of reactive?

This complaint discussed the state of some, but not all, street signs that show signs of decay, making it difficult to recognise the street’s name.

The resident’s further sentiments toward Ekurhuleni echoed the following: “It is not up to the citizens of Ekurhuleni to point out to the council all the pitfalls in our area. We should not have to tell the council to fix potholes, street lights, traffic lights and to cut the grass.”

To this end, Zweli Dlamini, speaking on behalf of the City, told Express constructive criticism is well received.

“Indeed, a better service delivery requires community activism where service lapses are pointed out,” Dlamini said.

“We believe with the assistance of the community and resources allowing we can do more to correct a lot of service delivery matters within our communities.

And yes, the Covid-19 situation has impacted on us like the rest of the world, but as a City, we remain committed to serving our communities and attending to challenges as they are pointed out to us.”

He said the City continues to encourage ratepayers and other residents of Ekurhuleni to report service delivery challenges to 086 054 3000 or use the mobile platform, My COE App.

“It is through community reports that we can complement the service needs that are identified through our monitoring exercises,” Dlamini concluded.

The resident’s letter ended with the following sentiment: “Most of us in Ekurhuleni pay our monthly rates and taxes. We deserve better. Become proactive instead of reactive.”
