‘Beukes-Gat’ finally nearing permanent resolution

A new pipe will be installed from Stephanus Road running diagonally to Ceylon Road, completely cutting out the area where the hole is.

The ‘Beukes-Gat’ has been a notorious issue in Glen Marais referring to a hole that formed due to a flawed manhole design in Beukes Road.

According to Amanda Davison, this has been one of her major projects since being elected as Ward 15 councillor. “This area has been an issue for over 15 years, with the hole getting bigger and bigger.

“After months of communication, begging and fighting with various City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) departments I finally received a call that the roads and stormwater departments have initiated a project to fix the hole.”

She told Express that a handover site meeting was held in the first week of December to discuss the ‘Beukes-Gat’ project between her, stormwater department and the contractor.

“The stormwater system has a design flaw in terms of a T-junction which forces the water up through the manhole instead of directing it away towards the catchment.

“This then continues to break up the road surface and flushing debris down towards Old Pretoria Road.” She said a new pipe will be installed from Stephanus Road running diagonally to Ceylon Road, completely cutting out the area where the hole is. It then joins the existing stormwater system down Ceylon Road.

Delays were caused by what Davison called a “holdup with the CoE wayleave”, followed by the festive season closure and then the heavy rains the past few weeks.

“Currently the holdup is the contractor safety file. The contractor informed me that the final safety meeting will be on February 17,” Davison said.

On Thursday, February 18, Davison reported the excavator and pipes were on site. “Works signed the contract today and work will commence on Friday, February 19.”
