Attempted hijackings gone wrong in Glen Marais

The men, aged 44 and 40, were arrested by Kempton Park SAPS with the help of the community and Casper van der Walt, a Sec Pros reaction officer.

Two armed suspects were caught in Glen Marais after attempting to hijack two vehicles in different streets in Glen Marais at about 3pm on September 29.

The men, aged 44 and 40, were arrested and charged by Kempton Park SAPS after they were apprehended with the help of the community and Casper van der Walt, a Sec Pros reaction officer.

One of the suspects sustained injuries.

According to Kempton Park SAPS spokesperson Sgt Dipuo Ditsheng, the police were summoned to Monument Road and on arrival found a man who explained he was approached by two men while sitting in his Audi A4.

“They pointed a firearm at the man, forced him out of his vehicle and demanded his car keys.

“Both suspects got inside the vehicle, attempted to start the car and failed. The men abandoned the vehicle, leaving the victim unharmed. Security personnel spotted the incident and pursued the suspects, during which one suspect took out a firearm and fired several shots at the security personnel. The reaction officer retaliated,” said Ditsheng.

“The same suspects robbed another victim of his cellphone and money earlier the same day on EP Malan Street. The victim pursued the suspects driving a blue Hyundai until they lost control of their vehicle in Glen Marikana. They fled the scene on foot and attempted to hijack a woman at the corner of Vaalboom and Witgatboom in Glen Marais who was sitting in her red Hyundai Accent.

“They fired a shot and then got into the woman’s car. They tried to start the car but failed, they left the vehicle and ran again, the victim was left unharmed.

“The community helped the police and security officer in pursuing the suspects, who were arrested and found to be in possession of two unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” said Ditshego.

They were charged with armed robbery, attempted car hijacking, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Kempton Park SAPS acting station commander Col Lesetja Manewa commended the security officer and the community in ensuring the arrests of the suspects.

“These suspects will face the full might of the law,” said Manewa.

The two suspects will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.
