The family of Willem Petrus Cornelius van der Berg (54) is exhausting all potential avenues in finding him. He went missing on June 28.

According to his soon-to-be-daughter-in-law, Desiré Blom, he was last seen at the traffic lights at the liquor store, otherwise known as ‘Pienk Olifantjie’, on the corner of Green Avenue and CR Swart Road.

Wimpy, as he’s nicknamed, is bound to a wheelchair as his right leg was amputated.

“He was last seen being picked up by an ambulance at the traffic light. More recently he started being forgetful and wasn’t able to recognise people close to him.

“He used to beg at the traffic light at the Pienk Olifantjie, or other times he would be at a traffic light in Esther Park,” she said.

His family members contacted various facilities, like the fire department, to enquire about a potential lead to the ambulance that might’ve picked him up, but was told no information was available.

“We contacted Edenvale Hospital and the last record they had of him was on May 1. Thembisa Hospital’s record stated he was there last on June 16.”

When asked whether he went missing often, Blom said he has never gone missing and there were times where he would not be seen for two days at the most.

“He always had his cellphone with him and someone always knew where he was. When we contacted his number, an unfamiliar woman answered the phone and when we asked where she got the number, she just hung up the phone.”

Wimpy’s family is riddled with worry and confusion and desperately appeals to the public to come forward with any information as to when he was last seen.

A case has been opened at Norkem Park SAPS, as well as Thembisa SAPS.
