Help collect colouring books for kids

Pretorius also invites the youth to become an ambassador for Under His Covering by helping others and assisting with the project

While Under His Covering continues to serve Kempton’s underprivileged with its food project, they invite residents to donate to its new project seeking colouring books, crayons and pencils.

“We are raising funds to print our own colouring books to help underprivileged children,” said the NPO’s Carike Pretorius.

Pretorius has made tremendous efforts since the start of lockdown to ensure needy families have bare necessities to keep themselves fed. In her journey across Kempton Park in helping big families, single moms and unemployed men, she discovered another need.

“I came across a family living in a warehouse in Pomona. There are and at least three children of varying ages. I realised the young boys’ only occupation during the day was seeking geckos and lizards and slamming their heads with rocks. This disturbed me,” said Pretorius.

“I need people who can donate colouring books. PNA, for example, sells activity books for kids from three years old to 13. These activity books are for Grades Three, Four and higher.

“Colouring has an important place in child development and can easily be incorporated into a child’s day.

“It provides an opportunity to practice and develop many skills such as concentration, fine motoring senses and coordination for early writing skills and correct finger grip. Colouring is also therapeutic, which is a bonus.”

With this initiative, Pretorius also invites the youth to become an ambassador for Under His Covering by helping others and assisting with the project by handing out collected goods.

“This is a simple and easy project to show kids they have the ability to help others.”

You can become part of Under His Covering’s volunteer structure from the age of five.
