EMPD officer accused of truck hijacking in Kempton Park

The officer was arrested and detained at Kempton Park Police Station

The Democratic Alliance in Ekurhuleni has welcomed the arrest of an EMPD officer following the officer’s alleged involvement in the hijacking of a cargo truck in Kempton Park.

“We have been informed that the officer was arrested and detained at Kempton Park Police Station and would be charged with armed robbery and hijacking,” said DA leader in Ekurhuleni alderman Phillip de Lange and the DA shadow MMC for community safety in the metro, Clr Jaco Terblanche.

Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, confirmed the arrest.

“We can confirm that a member stationed in the K9-unit has been arrested by the provincial task team on the allegations of hijacking and will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court.

“At this stage, we cannot reveal further information as the investigation is at a crucial stage and the matter is being handled by the provincial office,” said Mtshali.
The DA applauded the swift response which led to the hijackers being apprehended and trust the law will run its course swiftly.

“Incidents like this again highlight our call that the City and the metro police must vet all officers, as it is alleged that some have criminal records. This is something the DA has long been calling for, and we strongly believe that now is the time to rapidly implement this.”
