WATCH: Hamba Corona, sings Norkem musician in new song

'My advice is to not suffer in silence, rather speak up when you need help. Together we can fight this virus'

Norkem Park resident Martin Kekana (28) has recently released a song to give hope to the area’s residents during this time of crisis.

The musician, also known as Numi (Never Underestimate My Intelligence), teamed up with Nigerian duo Playaz earlier this month to use music as a form of restoration amid the lockdown.

Kekana produced Hamba Corona to bring awareness and social change in the community. The song is available on YouTube.

“My creative process is complex. I might see or hear something that motivates me or that resonates with me, then I use it to produce a good sound. For example, the world is going through trying times, so I used that as inspiration to unite and give hope amid these tough times.

“Music is able to change the way we perceive the world, making it more positive and outgoing. Music is a calling, it has always been in my household. I was born into it.

“I never knew music was poetry until my childhood friend SP Dubb told me music was a form of expression. I’ve been writing poetry since a very young age. My grandmother taught me poetry in my mother tongue, Ndebele. She also used to sing a lot of totem traditional songs.

“I’m inspired by Ruphus Dhlamini, known as DJ Bossruu, my mentor. He did a lot of great things in a short space of time. He’s the one who believed in my talent and started funding my music career.

“Everyone knows about the ability of music to help people calm down. Music is able to make our minds peaceful, which will later help our ability to think differently about our hard times.

“My advice is to not suffer in silence, rather speak up when you need help. Together we can fight this virus. My advice for someone who wants to follow in my footsteps is don’t follow mine, follow yours and let mine be an inspiration.

“Create a complex dynasty where most creatives would love to feed off. That’s the fruit of your labour,” said Kekana.
