A day to remember for Ekurhuleni achievers

Council also granted the prestigious lifetime achievement award for the first time

The City of Ekurhuleni hosted three distinguished individuals at its monthly council meeting who received awards for their exceptional track record in their careers, and for being a source of inspiration to others.

Connie Chiume, an actress who has acted in numerous television programmes, including Zone 14 and Rhythm City, and starred in the award-winning Hollywood movie, Black Panther, was rewarded with an Excellence Award for her contribution to the arts, film and entertainment industry.

Bernard Parker, an Ekurhuleni-born soccer star and Kaizer Chiefs striker who has also featured for Bafana Bafana, was awarded an Excellence Award for consistent superb performance. He has been with Chiefs for the past nine years.

The City of Ekurhuleni Council Excellence Award is given to individuals from Ekurhuleni who have performed exceptionally well within their chosen profession. The council holds these individuals in high regard.

Council Speaker Alderman Patricia Kumalo thanked them for setting a good example for the youth. She said their stories were a true testimony that dreams do come true when they are pursued with diligence.

The Council also granted the prestigious lifetime achievement award to Nelson ‘Teenage’ Dladla. Known for his exceptional and creative skills on the soccer pitch during his heydays, Dladla is fondly remembered for his unmatched soccer skills.

His soccer career spanned more than 30 years. He continues to transfer his knowledge and skills at Mamelodi Sundowns’ junior structures as a coach.

The previous excellence award recipients include Sbu Leope, Senzo “Kwesta” Vilakazi and Nomathemba “Thembsie” Matu.
