Young Terenure athlete feels honoured to be among the top in SA

'Running is a great way to test my personal limits and find ways to challenge myself'

Mufaro Seth Muzvidziwa (14) from Terenure has proven his abilities as one of South Africa’s top 10 sub-youth provincial athletes in the 100m and 200m.

Muzvidiziwa is a Grade Nine learner at The King’s School in Linbro Park, Sandton and has been setting the track on fire since he was six.

“My coach saw the potential I didn’t see myself. He taught me how to be a professional athlete and has always supported and motivated me. He plays a huge role in my athletics career and I thank him for that.

“The 14-year-old is proud of having qualified as one of SAs top 10 sub-youth provincial athletes.

“I feel honoured to be part of something bigger than myself. It gives me the opportunity to have a tale to tell and give advice to my fellow teammates and ambitious athletes.

“Being chosen as one of the sports achievers has taught me self-discipline. For instance, amid lockdown I have been waking up at 6am to train. My coach gives me workout routines on a daily basis and my father has become my substitute coach to help me achieve specific goals.”

He ran his best times in both events last year. He ran the 100m in 12.25 at the Southern African Christian School’s Sports Association (Sacssa) meeting. His best time in the 200m, which is also his favourite event, is 25.25.

“Running is a great way to test my personal limits and find ways to challenge myself. Having to compete and let loose on the track is the best feeling ever. I feel such a sense of freedom and happiness. Running connects me to the community and nature.

“Competitions spark a fire in me because I think about winning and I’m driven by hunger and passion for running.

“I view other athletes as rivals but after the race we become friends. During practice, we never become too serious. We joke and share a special bond.

“I don’t entertain negativity in my life. At times I feel anxious about the outcome but that doesn’t overcrowd the joy I have for running. I have faith in myself, and that’s the important factor in my life,” said Muzvidziwa.
