Mother does not know her two young children died in Atlas Road accident

The family needs answers and calls on witnesses to contact them

A Birchleigh mother still does not know two of her children were killed in an accident the family was involved in late Saturday night.

Jean-Pierre (8) and Mackayla van Loggerenberg (3) were declared dead on the scene of the accident at the intersection of Atlas and Bass roads in Bonaero Park.

Their eight-month-old half baby sister, Abigail van Niekerk, survived the collision and was found in her car seat in the bushes with moderate injuries.

Their mother, Monica van Loggerenberg, is still unconscious in intensive care with serious injuries, Ruan van Niekerk, the brother of the baby’s father, Juan van Niekerk, said on Sunday afternoon. Juan and Monica are engaged.

“Monica could not be told yet about her older children’s deaths, Ruan told Express.

He said he and their parents were devastated.

“All three of us are currently in the Eastern Cape. Our parents managed to book a flight back home on Monday to support my brother, who really needs help.”

What makes things worse for the family is that they do not know exactly what happened.

“We need answers,” Ruan said. Anyone who witnessed the accident can call him on 082 579 7468.

Ineke van Huyssteen, spokesman for ER24, said paramedics arrived at the scene at 11.30pm.

“Another medical service assessed the two children but despite their best efforts the children were declared dead on the scene.

“A vehicle was lying on its side. A woman was found a few meters away from the vehicle. She was assessed and was found to be in a serious condition. A man was walking around on the scene with minor injuries,” Van Huyssteen said.

Another vehicle was found in a ditch. The driver sustained no injuries.
