IN what came as a surprise to many, the ANC did not win Ekurhuleni Metro with a clear majority last week, resulting in the metro being a hung council.
Political parties now have 14 days, starting from Saturday, August 6, to call a special council meeting where a new mayor, speaker, chief whip and executive committee must be elected.
If the DA in Ekurhuleni can go into a coalition with other parties, they can grab control of the metro. The ANC, on the other, will also be looking for partners to strengthen its hold on the metro and keep control.
The ANC in the metro lost many supporters. It could only get 48.64% of the vote in comparison to its 61.34% in 2006.
Support for the DA, on the other hand, has grown from 25.8% in 2006 to 33.65% this year. Newcomers, the Economic Freedom Front (EFF), garnered 11.23% of the vote.
This means the ANC has 109 seats, the DA 77, the EFF 25, the African Independent Congress (AIC) 4, the IFP 2 and the VF Plus 2.
The ACDP, PAC, PA (Patriotic Alliance), Cope and Irasa all have one seat each.
The DA has won seven of the eight wards in Kempton Park, keeping its dominance in the city.
