Three Christmas foods to keep away from your dog

If you are planning on treating your pets on Christmas day, there are some things you should avoid giving them.

We are all guilty of sneaking some turkey or a little piece of gammon under the table to give the fur babies a taste of Christmas lunch. The rich flavours, bones and gravy can, however, leave Milo with an upset stomach. While some boneless, white meat from the roast chicken is fine, you do want to stay away from these three Christmas lunch foods:

Meat with bones

You might think that a chunky turkey wing is a real spoil for your pooch, but this could end up in disaster as the bones could get stuck in Fluffy’s throat and cause him to choke. Cooked bones are even more of a hazard, as they are soft and tend to splinter which can cause internal tears and could lead to a major vet bill.

Onions or garlic

While these are staple ingredients in most meals, they are in fact toxic to dogs and should therefore be avoided. Be careful not to give your dog gravy or stuffing if it was made with either onions, garlic or even leeks or shallots. Vegetables such as carrots, beans, brussel sprouts or broccoli are all healthy, safe options for pets.

Puddings and mince pies

No Christmas Lunch is complete without a couple of mince pies or a hearty pudding for dessert. Keep these sweet treats away from your furries though, as currants, raisins and sultanas you find in the mince pie stuffing is also toxic to dogs. Chocolate is another major no-no.
