Hacks for converting a nursery into a toddler’s room

When your baby reaches the age of 24 months, you may want to consider converting their nursery into a “big kid’s room”.

As your baby grows into their own little person, so will the need to redecorate their nursery. Here are three tips on how to transform your baby’s room into an age-appropriate bedroom.

Choose versatile furniture

The most crucial first step is to get a toddler bed. Alternatively, invest in a single mattress and base, with side rails. Choose multi-functional furniture and keep in mind, that less is more. A workbench, for example, can go from being a changing table, to a desk, to a bookshelf over time. You can change the colours from white to bright blue when your child goes from baby to little boy and then sand it down and varnish it to suit a teenager’s room. If you have a small space, buying furniture that serves as beds, desks, and storage space all-in-one can be useful. Not only do you avoid investing in tiny desks and shelves that will be outgrown, but you also create more space for kids to run around in.

Be creative with wall paint and decals

A fresh coat of paint goes a long way to transforming a child’s room. Pinterest has so many great tips and ideas on how to paint a kid’s room. Wall decals are a great way to decorate a toddler’s room on a budget. There are plenty of wall decal themes for toddlers from fairies and hot air balloons to dinosaurs and pirate boats. Your child can choose which ones s/he would like. Alternatively, you can paint a wall with chalkboard paint and let your child redecorate every now and again. Whiteboard paint is also an option for kids with allergies. Just make sure your children know the difference between permanent and whiteboard markers!”

Involve your toddler

Let your child choose their own curtain prints, duvet cover, floor mat, etc. Getting them involved and excited in the process is part of the fun, plus there are lots of lessons to be taught about picking the right accessories or sticking within a budget. A bedroom should definitely be more than four walls and a bed, it should be a place your child enjoys spending time.
