Purr-fect food treats for your cats

Cats can be picky eaters and not all of them will snack, but it’s still helpful to have treats on hand for the days when they need extra motivation or you feel like lavishing them with more than love.

In general, 90 percent of your cat’s daily diet should come from well-balanced meals that prioritise high quality protein (think meat and fish), and provide fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and water. The remaining 10 percent can come from snacks.

If you’re going to treat your kitty with human food, small bits of cheese, cooked tuna, chicken, fish, liver or egg are safe options. Berries, bananas, spinach, cooked carrots, oatmeal and white rice (both in small amounts) are also fine.

Foods such as raisins, grapes, onions, garlic, chocolate and milk (other than their mother’s) are toxic to cats, as is anything with tea, alcohol or salt, and must obviously be avoided.

If you opt for store-bought treats, read the ingredients label first and buy the best quality you can afford.

Montego has just launched its own Pack O’ Purrs chewies for cats, which contain omegas 3 and 6, as well as taurine – an essential amino acid that supports cats’ vision, digestion and immune system. Available in two flavours – Cosmic Chicken & Cheese and Heavenly Tuna & Rosemary – for around R40 per packet.
