When it comes to contemporary kitchens, clean lines and sleek surfaces are a must, so it’s no surprise that integrated appliances have become a crucial design element. In fact, “on the high-end scale, any well-dressed kitchen worth its salt will boast integrated or built-in kitchen appliances throughout,” says Jon Molyneaux of Miele South Africa.
Built-in versus integrated
As their name suggests, built-in appliances are incorporated into the kitchen cabinetry, walls or countertops, while integrated appliances are built-in but have exterior panel covers to ensure they blend in with the surrounding cabinetry.
Large appliances, such as fridges and dishwashers lend themselves to integration, small items such as ovens and microwaves are best as built-in units, explains Jon.
Benefits of built-in
Sleek good looks – especially as more kitchens are being designed as open plan spaces that form part of larger living areas. “(Here) it’s aall about creating a sense of uniformity,” comments Jon. He mentions Miele’s Artline appliance range as an example. Instead of handles that distract, it features sensors that open motor-assisted doors.
Space-saving benefits – By selecting built-in appliances that would have normally been positioned on countertops, such as coffee machines and microwaves, you will free up precious work space and be able to install a wider selection of appliances.
Better functionality – “An oven installed at eye-level is far easier to operate than one where you have to bend down to look inside,” comments Jon. Another benefit is that built-in appliances allow you to choose where you’d like them to be positioned.
Easier to clean – Due to the way built-in appliances are installed, there are no gaps or spaces between the kitchen units and the appliances where food or dirt can get trapped. This makes them quicker and easier to clean.
Increased property values – Many potential homebuyers are drawn to attractive kitchens as this room is one of the most expensive areas to renovate, so if you plan to resell your property, this may add value. solutions.
Things to consider
When selecting integrated or built-in appliances, Jon has this additional advice:
- Built-in appliances cost more to replace, so make sure you prioritise quality.
- Select the most energy and water efficient appliances possible.
- Choose appliances that are silent and do not vibrate when in operation as any movement could have disastrous effects on the structure of your cabinetry over time.
- Function is obviously important, but your appliances must be visually appealing too if they’re going to add to the overall aesthetic of your kitchen.
“Integration might come at a slightly higher cost, but the results are worth it in the long run,” he concludes.
